Busy Roads for May Day

The National holiday celebrated on the 1st of May, the day of the worker, this year falls on a Tuesday, which means that many workers will actually take advantage of a long weekend break, especially as Wednesday is also a holiday in the Madrid community.

A special traffic operation is in place for the period, which will see 7.4 million trips, with coastal and mountainous regions being the most popular destinations.

The main movements will take place out of the large urban centres, affecting the transit of vehicles, especially from the interior to coastal areas of the Mediterranean and the south of the Peninsula, as well as tourist mountain areas or second residences.

The most unfavourable times to travel will be between 4 pm and 10 pm on Friday, April 27 and between 9 and 2 pm on Saturday.

The return to the inland areas is likely to occur mainly during the afternoon of Tuesday in all the Autonomous Communities except in the Community of Madrid. For this reason, congestion problems can occur on the main roads that channel the return movement to the big cities.

On Wednesday, May 2, a working day in all communities except the one in Madrid, there will be the usual movements during peak hour of entry and exit to large urban centres.

In the Community of Madrid, short-haul trips will be made to leisure and recreation areas close to urban centres. In the afternoon, there will be a return of the festive period and may present problems of circulation in the main roads that flow back into Madrid.
