DGT Functions Online

A few months ago, the Directorate General of Traffic (DGT) launched its Electronic Office, a website designed to facilitate all kinds of traffic related functions without the need for making an appointment or going to your local trafico office. In recent months, as previously featured, the miDGT app has also been operational, the application that allows you to carry all the information related to your driving licence and to your vehicle on your mobile.

If the health crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic has demonstrated anything, it is that the digital world has radically changed our lives. In many cases, it is not even necessary to physically go to work, since a computer and Internet connection means we can carry out these tasks from home. Public administrations are also assuming this virtual reality and are digitising many of their processes. This is the case of the Electronic Office the DGT presented last December.

According to Miguel Martín, IT manager of the DGT, this new tool has a triple objective: “First, to better organise the information on the procedures that a citizen can carry out digitally with the DGT” ; second, “offer personalised information and services through the miDGT section”, and third,  “improve accessibility and usability, making the user experience more pleasant”.

More and more services

Since December 2019, the page has registered more than 100 million visits and more than 400 million pages have been consulted. Almost 30 million procedures have also been carried out and more than a million fines have been paid online. Martín ensures that, on a normal day, 100,000 visits are reached, 5,000 of which are to the miDGT section – a personal access area, with a password, with our personalised information.

In the future, services will be expanded so that “any procedure can be carried out digitally and easily,” says Miguel Martín, who stresses that the objective is that, between this year and next,  “practically all of our procedures ” will not require face-to-face protocols, especially “ those with the highest volume and impact”.

What does it offer?

In the Electronic Office, we can find everything related to the driving licence and our vehicle: request a special authorisation to drive or a duplicate licence, pay a fine or consult important information related to the DGT, among others.

Accessible in all the official Spanish languages (Spanish, Catalan, Basque and Galician), the site also has a translation function for English, German and French, this page offers clear information and simple to use services. According to Martín, with the new design and more languages, the DGT wanted to anticipate and adapt to the needs of the user.
