A 39-year-old man surrendered himself to police in Jaén after a search was launched to find him in connection with an incident in which 5 elderly women were knocked over by a car.

The incident occurred at around 22:30 on Avenida de Andalucía in the city of Jaén, after the 112 emergency coordination centre received numerous calls reporting several people being knocked down on a pedestrian crossing.

Emergency services were immediately sent to the scene and discovered that the driver had already fled, leaving five women, aged 65, 74, 80 and two women aged 70, suffering various traumas and injuries, being treated at the scene, before being taken to hospital for treatment. Three of the women were later discharged, leaving two admitted with multiple fractures.

The vehicle was unable to stop in time due to the high speed at which it was being driven. According to witnesses, the car attempted to stop and skidded for “a long time”, which alerted people who were in a nearby terrace, but was unable to avoid the women on the crossing.

Data collected from the scene revealed skid marks in excess of 40 metres, indicating the high speed at which the vehicle was driving and the lack of control in the attempted stop.

The man who was wanted by police in connection with the incident presented himself, accompanied by his lawyer, at Jaén Police Station, where he was charged with a crime for driving under the influence of drugs and reckless driving.
