Officers from the Guardia Civil in Murcia arrested the driver of a 40-ton articulated truck who was driving with nine times the permitted amount of alcohol in his system.

The vehicle was observed zigzagging as it drove along the A-30 Albacete to Murcia road in the Murcia area, after several other drivers reported the vehicle to the police.

Having stopped the truck at kilometre 135,500 the vehicle was removed to a nearby service station.,

The driver was then requested to provide a sample of breath, which showed a positive result for alcohol of 1.33 and 1.31 milligrams of alcohol per litre of exhaled air, nine times the 0.15milligrams per litre maximum for a professional driver.

The vehicle, which was carrying vegetables, was immobilised until the next day.

The 55 year old Polish driver was subsequently arrested for the offence, and brought before the courts in Murcia, where is will be dealt with as a criminal offence under Article 379 of the Penal Code, with the driver facing up to six months in prison, a hefty fine, community service and a ban of up to four years.
