It was believed that the crash was caused by a car overtaking in an inappropriate place, during a stretch of road where construction work is being carried out, resulting in the grey suspect car driving head-on towards a blue Ford Fusion in which the victims were travelling.

Seeing no choice, the driver of the victim car took evasive action and swerved to avoid the oncoming grey vehicle, pulling off the road and landing in a ditch alongside.

The suspected offending vehicle failed to stop at the scene and continued, leaving the occupants of the victim car injured by the roadside.

The 47 year old driver was the most seriously injured, although all occupants were treated by medical staff and taken to hospital in Monforte de Lemos.

The presumed cause of the crash was the overtaking manoeuvre, and so the investigators launched a search for the offending vehicle, and successfully located the driver who faces charges of reckless driving and failing to stop following the crash.
