Although the special traffic operation for the Easter break may be coming to a close, the intensified vigilance of the traffic police will be continuing this week, with a special focus on speed.

Between the 17th and 23rd of April, traffic officers from the Guardia Civil, assisted in other areas by officers from the local and regional police, will be carrying out intensified and random checks on speeding vehicles, predominantly on the conventional road network, where more serious incidents occur.

Inappropriate speed is one of the main contributing factors of road traffic incidents and fatalities, and as this is also one of the factors totally in the hands of drivers, education through enforcement, with fines and sanctions, often the only way of dealing with those who risk the lives of themselves and others through this action.

Some local police forces, including Torrevieja, have the use of specially equipped vehicles on loan from the DGT. These vehicles are equipped with radar and breathalyser equipment.

Officers on the ground will also be supported from the air, as the Pegasus equipped helicopters will be keeping a watchful eye, not only looking for speeding vehicles but other offences as well, and the network of traffic cameras will also be in use.

The ground officers will be operating new “dynamic controls”, which means they will be moving to different areas more frequently, so as to avoid the dissemination of information of their locations through social media and mobile apps.
