The Directorate General of Traffic (DGT) has given two vehicles to municipalities in Santander and Marina de Cudeyo to be used in campaigns for controlling speed and the use of alcohol and drugs.

20150426 - Speed Check Cars Given to Local Councils

A formal presentation of the vehicles took place this weekend with local mayors accepting the vehicles which will be used by the police in their respective areas.

The vehicles are equipped with breathalysers and speed monitoring equipment, and are part of a collaboration agreement between the Ministry of the Interior and local councils.

Spokesperson for the government of Cantabria, Samuel Ruiz, said in a presentation that “excessive or inappropriate speed remains one of the main causes of traffic accidents”, reporting how some 450 local drivers from Cantabria were reported for speeding in the last campaign.

The delegates valued the “essential collaboration” between bodies such as the Guardia Civil and local police “in order that increasingly more drivers will respect speed limits”, as well as the use of alcohol and drugs.
