A total of ten people were killed on Spanish roads this weekend, in the provisional balance that counts an extended period due to the May holiday, between 15:00 on Thursday and 20:00 on Sunday.

Of those who lost their lives, three of them were motorcyclist, two were cyclists and at least one was a pedestrian who was knocked down and killed on the N-332 in Campello. The 36 year old Spanish national, who lives in Benidorm, was struck in the early hours of Saturday morning.

The worst day of the period was Saturday when six people were killed and another nine were injured. The occupants of one car had a very lucky escape when their vehicle was saved from falling into the Ebro River by a crash barrier following a collision.

In addition to being a traditional holiday period in coastal zones, the weekend also coincided with the motorcycle Grand Prix in Jerez. During that event, the 112 emergency call centre dealt with 410 incidents relating to the event.

Queues continued throughout Sunday afternoon on many roads heading away from the coastal areas, but were later reported to be easing.
