The Mayor of Torrevieja, José Manuel Dolón of the Los Verdes green party, has this week received a response from the Ministry of Public Works regarding the long awaited proposal to widen the deadly N-332 main road as it passes Torrevieja.

The positive response states that the approval process for the construction project will begin “soon”, and the preparation for the tender process is being done “with all possible speed, because we know the importance of the project to this city”.

Whilst explaining the content of the letter to the press, Dolón said that he will closely monitor the process “working every day of the year in this case, to avoid suffering further delays”, as has been the state so far.

There is still some controversy surrounding the project however as it lacks both an adequate environmental impact study and sufficient strategies to deal with rain, storms and flooding, a problem which the area is tormented by at certain times of year. Lack of effective planning and issuing building licences has been blamed on much of the flooding problem, as no contingencies we in place to deal with the water flow during the massive growth of the town during the property boom.
