Officers from the Guardia Civil have arrested nine people, eight of them male and one woman, all aged between 22 and 42 and of Romanian nationality, believed to be involved in a series of robberies from foreign travellers arriving at Alicante-Elche and Murcia San Javier airports.

The information released on Monday reveals that the arrests occurred late last month in the towns of Guardamar del Segura and Formentera after the investigation began in April when officers became aware of a series of robberies with similarities.

The gang would track and follow their victims, mainly early in the evening, using rental vehicles that frequently changed, thus hindering surveillance. Upon following their victims to their destination the gang would then rob them of their belongings, often unseen.

During the course of the investigation officers identified the group as being responsible for robberies on the Orihuela Costa, Torrevieja, Algorfa, San Miguel de Salinas, Calpe and La Manga del Mar Menor.

During the raids of the homes the officers recovered several bags, a mobile phone and 1,150 euro in cash that corresponded to items stolen in robberies.

The detainees have been brought before the courts in Orihuela for processing.
