Baby Rescued after being Locked in Car

Fire fighters from the Santander Provincial Consortium rescued a baby who had been trapped inside a vehicle in the Cantabrian capital.

It was the child’s mother who alerted the authorities of the incident, when she called for assistance from the underground car park at the University Hospital Marqués de Valdecilla.

According to the details of the report from the incident which took place on Monday, the child was not at immediate risk inside the vehicle, but the incident serves as a warning of how quickly a situation can develop.

The woman said that it was the little girl, just one year old, who took the keys from inside her mother’s purse. As the mother was about to take her out of the car, the girl pressed the button on the remote control key, closing the doors, becoming trapped inside.

The mother instantly contacted the 112 emergency coordination centre who dispatched a rescue unit to the scene.

The rescue operation consisted of breaking a small glass window on the vehicle in order to open the doors.

Fortunately, the quick reaction of the authorities avoided major problems. Last week, another one-year-old girl was found dead inside a vehicle in the district of Hortaleza, in Madrid.

The authorities confirmed that the tragic event was caused by the father of the child forgetting to take the child to nursery and, after arriving at his place of work, got out of the car without thinking about his daughter. Hours later, the authorities found the girl’s lifeless body.

A similar situation happened in August.
