Five Common Driver Actions That Can Be Fined

One of the most common driving offences is the improper use of a mobile phone while driving. Despite ongoing awareness campaigns, many drivers continue to use their mobile phone without hands-free equipment, which is not only punishable by a fine of 200 euro and the loss of six points from the licence but is also one of the main causes of road traffic collisions. Remember, although many hands-free devices are allowed, Bluetooth headsets are not.

Another common behaviour that is punishable is not respecting the safety distance. Maintaining an adequate distance from the vehicle in front is crucial to avoiding collisions, especially in situations of sudden braking. The penalty for not maintaining this distance can be 200 euro and the loss of four points on the licence.

Likewise, not using the turn signals or indicators correctly when changing lanes or turning is another action that can lead to fines. Although it seems like a basic rule, it is common to see drivers who do not signal their manoeuvres, which can lead to confusion and dangerous situations on the road.

Having your arm out of the window. We have talked about hand signals before, and as we have just mentioned turn signals, it is important to note that having an arm through the window might confuse other road users thinking you are “indicating”, there are also safety concerns for yourself.

Is this driver resting his arm or indicating an intention to turn right?

Finally, there is the offence of parking in prohibited areas, such as pedestrian crossings, curves or junctions. Parking in these places can not only be punished with a fine of 200 euro but can also endanger pedestrians and other drivers by reducing visibility and increasing the risk of incidents.
