Torrevieja Fire Station Opens its Doors on Saturday

We all hope that we never need to experience it for real, but have you ever wondered how fire fighters are able to cut victims from car crashes, or how dogs are used in rescue activities? These questions, and many more, will be answered in Torrevieja on Saturday when the fire station opens its doors to visitors and fire fighters perform a number of public displays.

In addition to showing some of the routines the fire fighters train for, the day is also being used to collect toys and gifts which will then be distributed to the less fortunate, in conjunction with the social welfare department of Torrevieja, the Cruz Roja and the University Hospital of Torrevieja.

The councillor for social welfare in Torrevieja, Fabiana Ibarra, explained that “the fire fighters had this wonderful idea and contacted Social Welfare to help them in the organisation, something we accepted immediately.” The councillor said that “the only thing we ask is that, as far as possible, the toys that are provided are neutral and are not gender stereotypes.”

The presentation this week also involved Borja Guirao, the fire fighter who devised the activity, and José Miguel Robles, sergeant of the fire station of Torrevieja.

Robles explained that “in addition to the solidarity initiative we want to take advantage of the event to offer an open day where different activities will be carried out so that people get to know us and what we do”. Among these activities, there will be an exhibition of extraction at 11:00 and another one by the canine rescue group at 12:00. There will also be a fire fighters uniform on hand for you to have your photograph taken dressed as a fire fighter.

The event takes place on Saturday, 22 December, at the Torrevieja fire station, starting at 11:00 and ending at 1:30 p.m., with toy collections throughout, although everyone is invited along to see the work of the teams who are on hand every day of the year for when we might need them, even though we all hope that we never will.
