Officers from the Guardia Civil have arrested a group allegedly responsible for a series of violent thefts of truck trailers across the Vega Baja, which they would subsequently sell in Madrid.

Two men and a woman have been arrested for the crimes, as well as allegedly being involved in drug trafficking.

The investigation began in August when the gang were thought to have been involved in the robbery of 24,000 euro from a currency exchange office on the Orihuela Costa. The offenders fled the scene on a motorbike.

Officers from Pilar de la Horadada identified the suspects in that case and related them to a series of thefts of two truck trailers from the Alicante town of Ibi, close to the A-7 motorway.

The officers then related the case to an organisation involved in trafficking drugs, including cocaine, hashish and marijuana.

During the raids in Torrevieja and Rojales, officers seized two high-end vehicles, each valued at 25,000 euro, two high-powered motorcycles, a large amount of cash, numerous electronic devices, including 12 mobile phones and a laptop. Officers also seized 640 grams of marijuana, 30 grams of cocaine and 50 grams of hashish, two indoor plantations of 130 plants, and a variety of drug related paraphernalia.

The two trucks were also recovered, before the gang had managed to take them to Madrid, with one of them already prepared with false plates and documentation, with licence plates stolen from Murcia.

Those arrested were two Spaniards, aged 30 and 28 years of age, and a 28-year-old Bulgarian from the Torrevieja and Rojales area. The two men were remanded in custody whilst the woman was released pending further investigations.
