During July 2025, Spain’s road network saw 101 fatal collisions claiming the lives of 112 individuals—an increase of two compared to the same month in 2024, despite only a modest 3 % rise in long-distance traffic.
Encouragingly, there were three days without any fatalities—Monday 14, Wednesday 16, and Monday 28—showing that zero road deaths is achievable when collective effort is applied.

Safety Device Non-compliance
Alarmingly, 17 of the deceased were not using any safety restraint at the moment of the accident:
- 13 were occupants of passenger cars
- 3 were in vans
- 1 was in a lorry
This continued disregard for basic safety measures is deeply concerning.
Breakdown by Road Type
- Motorways and dual carriageways saw a decrease in fatalities
- Conventional roads witnessed a rise in deaths, reinforcing their greater risk
Victim Categories
There was a decrease of 15 fatalities among vulnerable users (pedestrians, cyclists, motorcyclists) compared to July 2024. In contrast, fatalities among car occupants rose by 13.
Regional Variations
- Andalucía recorded the highest number of fatalities in July — 24 deaths
- Castilla y León registered a significant drop, with just 10 fatalities, down from 17 the previous year
Looking Ahead
Spain begins August 2025 under heightened scrutiny. Last August saw 133 road fatalities, setting a difficult precedent. So far this year, road deaths total 632, which is 15 fewer than by this point in 2024. The challenge is clear: achieving a safer summer by prioritising vigilance and responsible driving.
