Every December, roads across Spain fill with celebration — and with avoidable tragedy. Behind every drink-driving collision are three groups forever changed: the driver who must live with the guilt, the police officers who witness the aftermath, and the families who receive the knock on the door no one ever wants.
Drivers often believe they are “fine”. Alcohol clouds judgement before the driver notices it, and when a sudden moment demands a quick reaction, it is already too late. For many, the punishment is not a fine or a court sentence, but a lifetime of remorse.
Police officers see the scenes no one else sees. The shattered silence, the panic, the faces of people realising what has happened. Later comes the hardest task — telling a family their loved one will not be coming home. Those moments stay with the officers long after the shift ends.
Families live with the aftermath for the rest of their lives. The empty chair at the table. The last unread message. The milestones that will never happen. A decision made by a stranger takes everything from them.
The message is clear. If you drive, do not drink. If you have been drinking, do not drive. The only safe limit is zero.
One night of pleasure can last a few hours. A lifetime of regret lasts forever.
