A 27 year old male was seriously injured on Tuesday after the BMW 330 he was driving collided with a school bus carrying 52 young children, aged between 3 and 4, accompanied by six monitors, all returning from a day trip.
The bus was returning to the colegio Urretxindorra in Bilbao after a trip to the Karpin Abentura adventure park when the incident occurred at 15:15 in the municipality of Ampuero, at kilometre 78,200 of the N-629 road, which was closed to traffic for two hours as a result.
The occupants of the bus, including the driver, were unharmed in the crash, apart from the shock of the incident, whereas the male driver of the BMW had to be extracted from the car by fire fighters, before being transferred to the Politraumatología the Marqués de Valdecilla University Hospital, in a serious condition, where he is being treated for his injuries, including multiple fractures and a dislocated left knee and having had to be intubated on the way to hospital.
The ferocity of the collision was such that the front of the car was completely unrecognizable and one of its front wheels appeared under the bus, where it had travelled for around one hundred meters. The wife and friends of the injured driver, a resident of the area, arrived at the scene within minutes.
An investigation has been launched to ascertain the cause of the crash.
