A 40-year-old Guardia Civil traffic officer, identified with the initials CDD, has been killed in the line of duty, after being hit by a van on the A-1 near Madrid.

The incident occurred just after 11:00 on Monday morning in the San Sebastián de los Reyes area when the officer had stopped a vehicle to ask for documentation when the van hit the officer, throwing him several metres into the road ahead.

Emergency medics immediately attended but could do nothing to save the life of the officer who was confirmed dead at the scene.

Guardia Civil colleagues also attended, with the van driver producing a negative alcohol and drugs test, the driver saying that he ”did not see” the officer.

A further investigation is being carried out to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the tragedy. Meanwhile, government delegates and colleagues have extended their condolences to the family of the officer.
