The Christmas holiday period is always a time worth reminding ourselves of the rules related to carrying items in the car, whether that be an abundance of presents or food, or packing for a break away, whatever we are carrying, we must do so safely.
In order to ensure the maximum possible safe conditions, everything in a vehicle must be secure. This not only includes the vehicle occupants, who must wear a seat belt, but also any items being carried, which could be anything from your weekly shopping to cargo in a freight truck, it doesn’t matter what the objects or vehicles are, the items must be secure.
According to the rules in Spain, the load transported in a vehicle, as well as the accessories used for its conditioning or protection, must be arranged and, if necessary, secured in such a way that they cannot:
- Drag, fall completely or partially, or move in a dangerous manner.
- Compromise the stability of the vehicle.
- Produce noise, dust or other nuisances that can be avoided.
- Hide lighting or light signalling devices, mandatory plates or devices and manual warnings from drivers.
In addition, the transportation of materials that produce dust or may fall must always be carried by covering them completely and effectively.
When it comes to smaller loads like shopping, for example, it should always be carried in the boot of the vehicle, never on the seats, and always secure. One of the problems with carrying shopping on the seats is that in a collision or even harsh braking, the individual items may fly forward, becoming projectiles that can seriously harm the occupants of the vehicle.
Larger items can compromise the stability or handling of the vehicle, and so must not put anybody at undue risk, and must only be carried in a suitable manner.
