Without sparking the usual debate of who does it better, in Spain there are specific rules for roundabouts, many of which are ignored on a daily basis, and may which result in collisions, of fines, the latter being what we will explain.
According to the DGT, the most common infraction is trying to access the roundabout without respecting the priority of vehicles already circulating on it. Many drivers are in a hurry and when they reach the roundabouts they enter aggressively, potentially causing a collision. Well, this behaviour, in addition to damaging their own car, means a fine of 200 euro and the loss of four points on their licence.
The other action highlighted by the DGT is the one that usually causes the horn to be used the most often, and the most bumps. A vehicle is driving in the left lane wanting to exit the roundabout. The rule is clear, always exit a roundabout from the righthand lane, and this common occurrence is caused by driver being ill prepared and being in the wrong lane, resulting in them having to cross the left lane to exit, causing a collision with the vehicle that is driving correctly. This action can result in a fine of 500 euro and the loss of six points from the licence. Worst still, if the manoeuvre was considered “reckless, it could be considered a crime.
But there are other types of behaviour at roundabouts that also concern the Traffic Department. According to its data, 8% of incidents that occur at them are related to speeding. The DGT always points out that these sections are designed to be driven on at low speed, because otherwise you could lose control of your car or cause manoeuvres that would disturb other users.
The last note on the most common violations at roundabouts has to do with users not respecting the safety distance. Taking into account that roundabouts are usually very crowded with vehicles of all kinds, it is very important to take extreme precautions to avoid a rear-end collision. Not to mention that driving in this way is also punishable by a fine of 200 euro and 4 points taken off you.
