How Many Beers Am I Allowed to Drink Before Driving?

It is a common question, how many beers can I drink before driving, or glasses of wine, and before we delve deeper into the legislation, the first thing we must and will always say is that the only safe limit is zero. So please, don’t consume any alcohol before driving.

However, in Spain, there is an allowance for alcohol, although it is much lower than many countries, including the UK.

Alcohol checks are frequent on the roads of Spain, normally conducted with a breathalyser at the roadside initially, although those findings can always be backed up with blood tests if needed.

Alcohol Limits in Spain:

Again, to repeat ourselves, the only safe limit is zero. However…

The generic maximum alcohol limit in Spain are 0.5 grams per litre of alcohol in blood and 0.25 milligrams per litre of alcohol breathed out.

For new drivers, the maximum limits are 0.3 grams per litre of alcohol in the blood and 0.15 milligrams per litre of alcohol in the breath.

For professional drivers, throughout the Spanish territory, the limits are 0.3 grams per litre of alcohol in blood and 0.15 milligrams per litre of alcohol in the breath.

So, How Many Beers Can You Drink?

There is no definitive answer to that question, as we all differ in size, shape and tolerance. Stand next to anybody near you, and you will see that.

However, as a general guide, the DGT says that with just two small beers, a person weighing around 70 kilograms could give a positive breathalyser test.

Be Responsible!

Despite the limits, we should not be playing around, nor should we try to push those limits to the edge. It is not only our own lives we are risking, but those of others on the roads.

Remember, alcohol can have an immediate effect, but that effect can also linger, so even if you have left the car at home because you are going for a “heavy” night out, you may still be over the limit, and affected by alcohol, the morning after.
