#SpoilerAlert, the only way is to not drink and drive, but that doesn’t mean that the legend of the urban myth doesn’t get exaggerated through the internet, explaining how you can “cheat” the breathalyser, but the truth is, they don’t work.
The simple answer, as always, is, “if you drink, don’t drive”, as Stevie Wonder once said, and irrespective of the “limits”, whether legal or perceived, the only safe amount of alcohol is zero.
During the summer, one of the three worst periods for drink driving, along with the Christmas period and Easter, the DGT ran an advertising campaign which focussed not only on the zero rate, but also to dispel some of the myths about the breathalyser.
Whether it be swilling with mouthwash, drinking coffee, eating coffee beans, mints, a big meal, or any of the other suggestions you might hear of, none of them work, that is the simple truth.
Remember that currently, the maximum permitted blood alcohol level in Spain is 0.5 grams per litre of blood, and 0.25 milligrams per litre of exhaled air for most drivers.
For professional and novice drivers, the limit is 0.3 grams per litre of blood and 0.15 milligrams per litre of air.
And for those under 18, the limit is precisely what is recommended for all drivers, zero alcohol.
