A change to the law in Spain will mean that motorcyclists will have to wear a full-face crash helmet, which provides additional protection around the face and jaw, unlike the open-faced equivalent.
The law already establishes that crash helmets for riding a motorbike or scooter in Spain must be of an approved type. There are different standards based on the intended use of the helmet, so a moped helmet is different to a motorbike helmet for example, testing for the latter being more rigorous. However, in addition to the legal requirements, there are also other matters that should be taken into consideration.
Helmets offered for sale on the internet should be checked before purchase to ensure they have the necessary standard approval for Spain and the EU, as there are many offered for sale from China, amongst other places, that don´t satisfy the minimum European standard.
You must be able to see the ECE (European Standard) label clearly. This proves that the helmet is of an approved type and suitable for use.
It must cover the forehead above the eyebrows.
It must not move or fall on the driver’s eyes or apply pressure on the forehead.
It must not hinder the driver’s peripheral vision.
If you wear spectacles, the helmet must not push or reduce the vision of the bikers who wear glasses.
Plus, and equally as important, it must be comfortable.
Remember, a helmet is only worn correctly if it is secured to the head it is protecting. Always use the chin strap and always make sure your helmet is secure.
We have looked specifically at motorbike helmets, but the same conditions can be adapted to whatever the need. Bicycle, scooter or skating helmets all have their own standards, and so it is important to check that the helmet being worn is fit for purpose.
