The DGT activates a special traffic operation for the Todos los Santos long weekend, anticipating 5.3 million trips across Spain. Discover key road safety tips, cemetery traffic advice, and local council bus arrangements.
The Directorate-General for Traffic (DGT) has officially activated its special surveillance, regulation, and road safety operation for the Todos los Santos festivities. The operation began at 15:00 on Friday, 30 October, and will remain active until midnight on Monday, 2 November 2026.
With over 5.3 million long-distance road trips expected across the country, traffic authorities anticipate heavy volumes on main motorways and access roads, particularly during the initial exit phase this Friday afternoon. Because November 1 falls on a Sunday this year, eight autonomous communities—Andalusia, Aragon, Asturias, the Canary Islands, Castilla-La Mancha, Castilla and Leon, Extremadura, and the Community of Madrid—have designated Monday, 2 November, as a regional public holiday, creating an extended three-day weekend.
Cemetery Access and Local Council Transport
Tradition dictates substantial local travel to cemeteries throughout the weekend. Local town halls (ayuntamientos) across Spain have implemented special traffic management plans near municipal cemeteries. Many local councils are operating special public bus services and restricted parking zones to alleviate congestion. Drivers are strongly advised to check with their local town hall before taking private vehicles near cemeteries.
Additional Road Measures
To ensure smooth circulation, the DGT has suspended roadworks that affect active traffic lanes and restricted certain sports events. Additional reversible lanes and dedicated alternate routes will be deployed at peak hours. Furthermore, authorities are closely monitoring transport corridors towards Andalusia following exceptional rail service adjustments, which have driven a heavier reliance on private cars and coaches.
Drivers are reminded to check vehicle conditions, maintain safe braking distances, and respect speed limits as we navigate one of the busiest travel periods of the autumn season.
