Fire fighters across Valencia have been called to rescue vehicle occupants trapped by floods on Saturday morning.

Overnight storms that continued into the morning caused significant surface water, which peaked at its problematic stage a little before 8:00 in the morning.

Five vehicles became trapped on the road between the Carrefour supermarket and Aquopolis water park in Torrevieja, all rescued by fire fighers based just down the road.

Across the region, there were 30 rain-related incidents that the rescuers were called to, although only another three resulted in their intervention.

A van carrying two people became trapped in a tunnel in the Valencia town of Catarroja, a family travelling in their car became trapped as their vehicle sunk into the ground, wheels spinning in the mud, in Alfafar, and in Manises, fire fighters assisted in a house rescue.

In addition to the rescues, lightning struck a tree in Cox which caused a fire, this took Orihuela fire fighters two hours to extinguish.

Although the rain has eased, vigilance still needs to be exercised as there is still a lot of surface water about. At times of heavy rain, it is best to avoid driving unless necessary, but if you do have to go out, allow extra time for your journey, and always drive at an appropriate speed, maintaining a safe distance.
