Having looked recently at the red lines at the back of trucks, we thought you might also like to know about the yellow rectangles, because they too can give all drivers an indication of certain characteristics of the vehicle displaying them.
These signs, known as the V-6, are an additional safety vehicle on the trucks which display them, but are also indicative of the size of the vehicle carrying it, which is useful for preventing accidents and allowing you plan an overtaking manoeuvre with more information, and therefore, hopefully, safer.
Royal Decree 1428/2003, of November 21, defines the characteristics of this sign. Specifically, the text reads: “V-6. Long vehicle. Indicates that the vehicle or combination of vehicles is longer than 12 metres.”
Therefore, the V-6 sign is mandatory for all vehicles (or combination) exceeding 12 metres in length, which generally applies to trucks, but also, for example, to a caravan attached to a car.
The V-6 sign, like most V signs, is visual. It belongs to the subgroup of mandatory reflective signs: that is, the plates must be approved and comply with the provisions of the General Vehicle Regulations.
Where is it installed?
The V-6 sign is mandatory on the rear of the vehicle. It must also be cantered on the axle, with a distance of between 500 and 1,500 millimetres from the ground. If this is not possible, it can be replaced with two plates, positioned symmetrically with respect to the axle and as close to the edges of the vehicle as possible.
The sign doesn’t have to be displayed horizontally. It can also be displayed vertically. Therefore, from the observer´s point of view, there is no difference whether they are horizontal or vertical. Additionally, the warning “Vehiculo longo” (Long Vehicle) may appear next to the V-6 sign, which has the same meaning and has probably been seen on the back of many trucks. Displaying these words on the vehicle isn’t mandatory, but they serve as a complement and help indicate that it’s a large vehicle.
Who should install it?
As we’ve mentioned, the V-6 sign is mandatory for all vehicles, or combinations of vehicles, exceeding 12 metres in length. The sign specifically indicates that the vehicle is “long,” and is therefore installed at the rear to warn other drivers to take precautions when overtaking or approaching it, since, given its size, its speed limit will be significantly lower than usual.
