Ignoring the tyre load index can be a serious mistake. This parameter is important because it determines the maximum weight that the tyres of any vehicle can support, making it essential for safe driving.
The load index is a numerical value that indicates the maximum weight that a tyre can carry in motion. This number is established by the manufacturer and takes into account the axle of the vehicle that supports the greatest load.
For conventional cars, this index usually varies between 88 and 99, while for commercial vehicles and trucks, it can be considerably higher.

How do you read the load index?
To find and read a tyre’s load index, you must follow these steps:
Location on the tyre
It is usually found next to the speed index on the sidewall of the tyre. For example, in a marking such as 155/80 R13 79T, the “79” indicates the index reference number of the maximum load that the tyre can withstand at its maximum speed.
Index table
To understand what each number means, you need to consult a standard table that associates each index with its load capacity in kilograms. A load index of 79 equates to a load capacity of around 437 kilograms.
Dunlop kindly provided a table to refer to, and we have included a few different tyres so you can see if you can work out the tyre load index for each.

Calculation according to vehicle weight
You can use the load index to calculate the maximum total mass the vehicle can support. Multiply the load index by the number of wheels to get the total. For example, a vehicle with four wheels and an index of 79 could support up to 1,748 kilograms, which includes the weight of the vehicle and the load being carried, combining people and goods.
Selecting the correct load index
When choosing the tyre with the correct load index, consider not only the maximum load capacity that each tyre can support and the total weight of the vehicle, but also the manufacturer’s recommendations. Know the weight of your vehicle both empty and with additional cargo. On large vehicles, a higher load index may be necessary to ensure safety and stability while driving. If you do not have precise information from the manufacturer, it is recommended to consult a professional to prevent risks.
The load index of your tyres plays an important role in your safety and driving efficiency. Determining the optimal index for your vehicle not only helps prevent incidents, but also improves the overall performance of the vehicle. Don’t let ignorance compromise your safety: pay attention to the load index and act accordingly.
