Officers from Elche Local Police arrested a man on suspicion of driving under the influence of excessive alcohol and in a vehicle which did not have insurance or ITV certification, after he caused an ambulance to crash in Elche.

The sole occupant of the ambulance, the driver, was luckily unhurt in the incident which occured on calle Jacarilla in the town, near to the main retail area just before midnight.

The driver of the car fled the scene in his vehicle after carrying out a manoeuvre which caused the ambulance to take evasive action and crash, turning over onto its side.

All available resources were deployed to the area and the exit routes quickly blocked, soon after which a suspect vehicle presented itself and the officers were able to intercept the car before it fled the town.

Having carried out the necessary checks, the officers could see that the driver was driving under the influence of alcohol, and subsequently gave a positive blood alcohol test. In addition, the vehicle had been deregistered and did not have the mandatory insurance or technical ITV certificate.

The ambulance driver needed the help of the officers to exit the overturned vehicle, but only suffered minor bruises. The ambulance was taken out of service as a result of the crash.
