First Major Summer Traffic Operation Begins

The first major traffic movement monitoring campaign of the summer began on Monday, with Operación Paso del Estrecho set to facilitate 2.5 million people and 600,000 vehicles between Europe and Africa.

The operation runs until the 15^th of September and will see two main elements of focus, the journey to Africa, which will be between the 15^th of June and the 15^th of August, and the return, which operates concurrently from the 15^th of July until the 15^th of September.

The busiest days are anticipated as being the first few days of August, namely the 1^st to the 4^th, whereas the busiest days for the return operation are expected to be from the 27^th to the 30^th of August. All weekends between the 10^th of July and the 23^rd of August will also be very busy.

The administrations at ports and harbours will be working together to ensure as smooth a flow as possible across the water, with ticket restrictions eased on most routes. Interpreters and technicians are on hand at the ports, and the roads will be policed by 9,000 officers having duties assigned to the operation.

The DGT will provide information relating to traffic problems during the course of the operation, but it is important to plan your journey carefully over the next few months, especially during the times stated on routes towards harbours and intercontinental links.

This operation will also coincide with the other major summer traffic flow plans, details of which will be released soon, when we see a major movement from inland and city areas to coastal and mountainous routes for the summer holidays.
