A 17-year-old male was killed and two girls, aged 15 and 17, injured, after being knocked down this weekend by a vehicle driven by a driver who tested positive for alcohol and drugs.

The incident happened in the Alicante town of Santa Pola, where the traditional Moors and Christians event is taking place. The town has called for three days official mourning, and has suspended some of the festivities, as a mark of respect for the victim.

Witnesses reported that the vehicle struck the first, fatal victim, at high speed, then apparently lost control and mounted the pavement. One of the victims became trapped with their leg under the car, another wedged between the vehicle and a vending machine, where the vehicle came to a stop. The driver apparently attempted to flee the scene but was apprehended by the local police.

Officers from the Guardia Civil, assisted by colleagues from the local police, are investigating the causes of the tragedy, which occurred around 04:30 on Sunday morning on Avenida de Santiago Bernabeu.

Later on Sunday morning, at around 09:30, another man, who was apparently driving under the influence of alcohol fell asleep at the wheel on the CV-500 as it passed through the Valencia town of El Saler, crashed head-on into another car after invading the opposite lane. Two people, aged 66 and 72, were injured in the crash.
