Failure to comply with speed limits can result in fines and the loss of points on your driver’s licence. In Spain, fines vary depending on the speeding rate detected, with different violation categories:
Minor offence: exceeding the speed limit by up to 20 km/h. This can result in a fine of up to 100 euro, without the loss of points.
Serious offence: Exceeding the speed limit by more than 20 km/h but less than 50 km/h. This carries a fine of between 300 and 500 euro, with the loss of between 2 and 6 points from your licence.
Very serious offence: When the speed limit is exceeded by more than 50 km/h, in other words, you go more than 50 km/h over the limit, such as 101 km/h in a zone limited to 50. In this case, the fine can reach 600 euro and entails the loss of 6 points. At this level it is also considered a crime against road safety, and as it is a crime it could result in prison, as well as the withdrawal of the driving licence.
For Spanish licence holders, the fines can be paid remotely, and benefit from a prompt payment discount. For foreign licence holders, the fine is payable on the spot, and there are no discounts. Moreover, if you are unable to pay your vehicle can be impounded until you do.
