The drunk driver who knocked down and killed a police officer at an alcohol checkpoint has been remanded in custody, without bail, by the judge.
Hansjörg Rohrbach, a Swizz national, is facing charges of involuntary manslaughter for fatally hitting officer José Luis Garea, who was performing a blood alcohol test on another driver with colleagues and a Guardia Civil patrol in Carballo (A Coruña) .
Rohrbach ran over the officer early on Saturday morning in his van when he failed to stop at a checkpoint. Tests conducted after the incident revealed that he exceeded the allowed alcohol rate, with concentrations of 0.91 and 0.94 milligrams per litre of exhaled air.
Rohrbach had already lost his licence two years ago after being caught with excessive alcohol in his system whilst driving. After court, his lawyer said that he was “sorry” for how things happened and offered his condolences to the family of the officer he killed.
With an apparent increase in habitual offenders taking to the road, the DGT has already announced a strategy to deal with those involved in multiple occurrences of drink or drug driving.
