A solar eclipse on 12 August is expected to attract significant public interest across Spain.
While it promises to be a memorable astronomical event, the Guardia Civil has reminded motorists that it also presents a number of road safety risks.
Drivers are being urged to prepare their journeys carefully and to avoid becoming distracted by the eclipse while behind the wheel.

Never watch the eclipse while driving
It may seem obvious, but every eclipse generates reports of motorists slowing unexpectedly, looking upwards, or stopping in unsuitable locations to watch the event.
Drivers should never attempt to observe the eclipse while driving.
Equally, they should never stop on a motorway, hard shoulder, slip road or any other location where stopping is prohibited or unsafe.
If you wish to watch the eclipse, plan ahead and identify a safe parking location well away from moving traffic.
Protect your eyesight properly
Looking directly at the Sun without suitable protection can cause permanent retinal damage.
This remains true even during a partial eclipse.
Ordinary sunglasses offer no protection.
Neither do homemade filters, smoked glass, photographic negatives or similar improvised methods.
Only certified solar viewing glasses designed specifically for observing eclipses should be used.
Expect the unexpected
Drivers should also anticipate unusual behaviour from others.
Some motorists may brake suddenly after noticing the eclipse.
Pedestrians and cyclists may become distracted while looking towards the sky.
Tourist areas and viewpoints may experience heavier traffic than usual.
Maintaining a safe following distance and reducing speed where appropriate will provide valuable extra time to react.
Plan your journey
If you intend to travel specifically to watch the eclipse:
- Check traffic information before leaving.
- Allow additional journey time.
- Carry drinking water, particularly during hot weather.
- Choose a safe viewing location in advance.
- Follow instructions from the Guardia Civil and local authorities.
Enjoy the event safely
Astronomical events are rare.
Road collisions should be rarer still.
No photograph or view is worth risking your eyesight or the safety of other road users.
Plan ahead.
Park safely.
Protect your vision.
And keep your full attention on the road until your journey has come to a safe stop.
