Alicante City Council is applying for a 4 million euro grant from the Ministry of Industry, Energy and Tourism, to enable them to install a real-time monitoring system for vehicles moving through the city.

The project was presented in Madrid on Monday and features the installation of more than one hundred cameras fitted with Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) software, in order to read and record the number plates of around 150,000 vehicles per day.

Once the system spots a vehicle it will monitor the speed, place of registration, type, and whether or not it has insurance and ITV certification.

The system has the backing of the national traffic authority, the DGT, and would place Alicante in the forefront across Europe in traffic management terms.

The city council has also said that in the event of the grant application being unsuccessful then the town hall would look at funding its implementation.
